La  Grande  Bergerie

La grande bergerie is hidden in the hamlet of Puyvert, just outside the historic village of Lourmarin, one of the most beautiful villages of Provence, with its chateau, famous restaurants and art galleries.   Surrounded by the beauty of the Luberon mountains, our home provides interior luxury with the joys of outdoor Provencal living.

For those that are restless, it provides a central spot from which to explore the wonders of Provence and to which to return for a relaxing late afternoon swim and walk in the vineyards and hills.  Aix-en-Provence, with its memories of Cézanne, St. Remy haunted by the ghost of Van Gogh, the Roman cities of Arles, Nîmes and Orange, to name a few, all are within an easy drive.  The coast, indented with the Calanques and the fishing port of Cassis, is about 50 miles away, as is Marseilles with its bustling port dating back to the days before the Greeks and Romans.

The area is renowned for its restaurants, its wines, its artists, as well as for its sunshine for more than 300 days a year.

“Provence is a country to which  I am always returning, next week, next year, any day now, as soon as I can get on a train.”

                        Elizabeth David

Is it any better in Heaven, my friend, than you found it in Provence?

            William Carlos Williams

With my breath I draw toward me

    the air

that I feel coming from Provence;

everything that comes from there

     rejoices me,

so that when I hear good of it

     I listen smiling,

and for every word demand a

     hundred:

so much it pleases me when I hear

     good of it.

For no one knows so sweet a

     country

as from the Rhône to Vence,

enclosed between the sea and the

     Durance,

and nowhere knows a joy so pure

     that it shines.
